UK food business guide

Selling food online and for delivery

Selling through a website, app or social media does not remove normal food-business responsibilities. Plan registration, customer information, packing and delivery before accepting orders.

Register the food business

Official guidance includes businesses that sell food online or through distance selling. A new food business should register with its local authority in time, even when customers never visit the premises.

If an existing business begins delivery, review the food-safety system for the new risks created by taking orders, packing meals and transporting them.

Make the online offer clear

Customers should be able to understand what is being sold, the quantity, price and relevant allergen information. Keep Menu Item descriptions accurate and update them when a recipe, portion, price or availability changes.

Only offer delivery, collection or another service when the business can actually provide it for the selected place and time.

Provide allergen information twice

For delivery and takeaway food ordered online or by phone, the FSA says allergen information must be available before the purchase is completed and when the food is delivered. Written information at both stages is the FSA’s advice.

Keep each packed order identifiable. If an order includes a special allergy request, make sure the correct container is clearly marked and protected from cross-contamination.

Pack and transport food safely

Food must reach the customer safe and fit to eat. Use suitable food-safe containers that prevent contamination. Keep raw and ready-to-eat food apart, and use appropriate insulated or temperature-controlled transport for chilled, frozen or hot food.

  • Choose packaging that protects the food and closes securely.
  • Plan delivery times and distances around safe temperature control.
  • Keep the vehicle and reusable delivery equipment clean.
  • Separate food from chemicals, personal items and anything that could contaminate it.
  • Record the controls used in the food-safety system.

Keep responsibility clear

A marketplace can help customers discover and order food, but the food business remains responsible for its food, information and fulfilment. On CookSocket, Hosts must keep Listing, Menu, allergen, availability and service information accurate and follow the rules that apply to their business.

Check before taking the first order

  • Registration and any other required permissions are in place.
  • The online menu matches current recipes, portions, prices and allergens.
  • The food-safety system covers ordering, packing and transport.
  • Delivery containers and temperature controls have been tested.
  • Customers know how to raise an allergen question before purchase.
  • The business can fulfil only the locations and times it publishes.

Common questions

Do I need to register if I sell only through an app or social media?

Online and distance-selling businesses are included in the official registration guidance. Ask the local authority if you are unsure whether your activity counts as a food business.

Who is responsible when an order is placed through CookSocket?

The Host remains responsible for the food, allergen information, safe preparation, packing and the fulfilment service it offers. CookSocket does not replace the Host’s legal or food-safety responsibilities.

Can I use any bag for delivery?

Packaging and transport must prevent contamination and keep the food safe. The right equipment depends on the food, temperature, journey and risks, so follow the current FSA guidance and the business’s food-safety system.
