Tax & records in India

Keep clear records of your business income and expenses, and check which Income Tax and GST rules apply to your circumstances.

Last reviewed:

1. Understand business income

Income from your business may need to be reported for Income Tax. The appropriate return and treatment depend on your business structure and circumstances.

Track sales and business expenses, and keep invoices, receipts and relevant payment or bank records.

2. Keep food and tax registrations separate

FSSAI registration or licensing through FoSCoS covers food-business requirements. Income Tax and GST are separate tax obligations.

Completing one does not automatically complete the others.

3. Check whether GST applies

GST registration depends on your turnover, the type of supplies you make, where you operate and other GST rules. Check the official GST guidance for your circumstances.

This page does not use one universal turnover threshold because the applicable rules can vary by supply, state or Union Territory, exemptions and other registration conditions.

Official guidance

Use the latest official guidance for your circumstances before making tax or financial decisions.

General information only — not tax or financial advice. Tax rules depend on your circumstances and can change. Check the latest official guidance or speak to a qualified adviser.
